Prof. Dr. Alexa Färber – Urban Anthropology and Ethnography

Alexa Färber is Professor of Urban Anthropology and Ethnography at the HafenCity University Hamburg and the primary investigator for the “Low-Budget Urbanity” research initiative. She received her PhD. from the Humboldt University of Berlin and has a Master in Islamic Sciences and European Ethnology, also from Humboldt. She was assistant professor at the Departement of European Ethnology at Humboldt University, lecturer at Christian Albrechts University in Kiel, guest professor at the Institut d’urbanisme de Paris, Université Paris Est, Créteil and post-doc fellow at the Centre Maurice Halbwachs, Ecole normale supérieur, Paris.

She was also post-doc researcher in the research project “Urban culture and ethnic representation: Berlin and Moscow as emerging world cities” (2003-2007) funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) at the Department of European Ethnology at Humboldt University and doctoral fellow in DFG-Graduate Program “Representation, rhetoric, knowledge” at Viadrina University Frankfurt/Oder (1999-2002). She has served as an advisory board member of the DFG-funded Transatlantic Graduate Research Program at Technical University Berlin. Her research interests include methodologies of ANT and urban research, urban imagineering, Islam in urban space and mobility.
